Sizing Vintage Clothing
We won't drone on here about the philosophy behind clothing sizes over the decades. Bottom line--the tag size is usually meaningless for today's men and women!
It is essential that you measure something you own and compare it with the measurements in our listing before your purchase. Why? Our measurements are outside the garment measurements. In other words, if your chest is 42" and you buy a 42" t-shirt, it will be "skin tight." Whether it's a dress, t-shirt or sweater, measure something you already own that fits you well. Armed with that information, buying our vintage clothing will be a breeze.
We try to state all our sizes in terms of "Fits Like" for your convenience. Please remember these are guestimates, and it's up to you to make sure it will work for you. Because of the nature of vintage clothing, we do not accept returns.
Our Men's "Fits Like" sizing is based upon the following measurements. Lay a shirt flat and measure armpit-to-armpit. Then double that measurement and you'll have your chest size.
Small 34"-36" chest
Medium 38"-40" chest
Large 42"-44" chest
X-Large 46"-48" chest
XX-Large 50"-52" chest
We also provide "back length" measurements for men's shirts. That's measured in the center back of the shirt, from collar seam to bottom hem. We give sleeve measurements for long-sleeve shirts as measured from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
Women's vintage clothing is much more complex! We provide outside measurements for bust, waist, hips, back length and bottom width. If you've compared these to something you own and still are unsure, we welcome your questions before you buy.
